PEEL-OFF FACE masks have been a hot topic since American YouTuber Tiffany’s painful attempt to remove one went viral earlier this week.
Tiffany said she bought the product after spotting an ad for it on Facebook – she had qualms about it from the get go, but tried it anyway:
That video itself should be enough to dissuade you from buying a peel-off mask, but if you need more proof, skincare experts are also warning against them.
Facialist Andy Millward has said that they appear to be “very damaging to the skin”, writing on Facebook:
[You're] literally ripping the surface layer of skin off (and probably the vellus hair with it) so of course it’s going to feel soft and smooth. As for all those ‘blackheads’ it pulls out – the majority of the oils are actually needed by the skin so will be replaced within 30 days anyway to ensure healthy skin balance.
“As a one off, the skin is likely to recover without issue but continued use is a fast track to secondary skin concerns,” he wrote. “You have been warned!”
Speaking to Metro, he said people should also stay away from the DIY versions making the rounds on YouTube, which are made from PVA glue (!).
It’s a little like using a chainsaw to prune a tree, when some hand-held garden shears would have done the job. The chainsaw might get the job done, but you’ll end up stripping the tree a little further than intended.
Eeek. Painful and ineffective? Stay well away.
